Cabrera’s superb 160 yard approach to the 15th hole in the final round at Oakmont Country Club, Pennsylvania, finished just 18 inches behind the hole for a tap-in birdie. That shot – described by the player himself as “impressive” - gave Cabrera the lead at a crucial time and enabled him to become the first golfer from Argentina in 40 years to land a Major Championship.
In second place was Richard Green’s delicate chip from behind the 18th green in a sudden-death play-off with Jean-Francois Remesy of France, which sealed the BA-CA Open, presented by Telekom Austria.
Third place went to Niclas Fasth’s tee shot at the 71st hole at Golfclub München Eichenried. The Swede’s birdie two at the 17th was the vital stroke on his way to winning the BMW International Open title.
The European Tour Shot of the Month Award is presented to a Tour Member for the shot judged to be the most outstanding during each calendar month on The European Tour International schedule.
The winners so far this year have been: Retief Goosen of South Africa (January), Mikko Ilonen of Finland (February), South Africans Anton Haig (March) and Charl Schwartzel (April) and Justin Rose of England (May). The winning shots from each month are entered towards The European Tour Shot of the Year.
